All types of fuel used on marine equipment and maritime vehicles are termed marine fuel. Fuels are placed in categories based on blend and viscosity.
The system for categorizing marine fuel was established in 1982. Since then, several updates have been made with the current system being updated in 2005.
About Marine Gas Oil
MGO or marine gas oil is much like diesel fuel used in trucks and cars.
About Heavy Fuel Oil
HFO or heavy fuel oil is typically used as a blend with other marine fuels. The gross product is very heavy and dense; similar to that used in factories.
About Marine Diesel Oil
MDO or marine diesel oil is created by blending together marine gas oil and heavy fuel oil.
About Intermediate Fuel Oil
IFO or intermediate fuel oil is also created as a blend. The two fuels mixed are marine gas oil and heavy fuel oil with more diesel oil than gas oil.
About Medium Fuel Oil
MFO or medium fuel oil is another step down from intermediate fuel oil. This blend of heavy fuel oil and marine gas oil contains the least amount of gas oil.
